News24xx.com - More than half of senior Dutch priests are said to have covered up cases of sexual abuse of children between 1945 and 2010. This is based on reports from Dutch daily NRC regarding the abuse scandal that broke the church.

For 65 years, quoted by AFP, 20 of the 39 Dutch cardinals, their bishops and helpers were called "cover up cases of sexual harassment, allowing the perpetrators to cause more victims. Four [pastors] harassed children and 16 others allowed the transfer of pedophile priests which could cause new victims in other churches" the Dutch newspaper added.

The NRC said that most of the priests accused of harassment had died, and the cases had expired based on the law. Those who are still alive have reportedly refused to comment.

Church spokesman Daphne van Roosendaal told AFP that the church could "confirm some" of the report. "The names of several bishops [referred to by NRC] match the names mentioned in the report commissioned by the Church in 2010" he added.

On Wednesday, German Catholic Church said they were "disappointed and embarrassed" by the sexual abuse of children by religious leaders for decades. This disclosure is th e latest in a number of allegations against Catholic Church on several continents.
