News24xx.com - In all flights, passengers are required to deactivate their cellphones or activate its flight mode when the plane is about to take off. This is because waves from mobile phones can interfere with the flow of communication and aircraft navigation.

But not many are aware of the dangers of cellphones in air travel can be more fatal, than signal interference. Quoted from Travel and Leisure, Qatar Airways business class passenger accidentally dropped his cellphone between the passenger seats on Wednesday, September 26th 2018. While trying to reach it, the phone was pressed and crushed and resulted sparks and fire. At that time, the trip was still two hours from landing in Melbourne, Australia.

The cabin crew had considered making an emergency landing in Sydney, but the fire was finally extinguished by a fire extinguisher. Even though the plane arrived at its destination safely, the incident made many parties aware of the security problems that had escaped their attention.

According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), there are 46 burning lithium ion batteries in flights around the world in 2017. This is because the lithium ion battery components on mobile phones can heat up quickly and cause fire when damaged.
