News24xx.com - Researchers have discovered one of the rarest minerals on Earth buried deep in the ancient meteorite crater in Western Australia, which is called Reidite. Reidite is only formed when rocks hit Earth from outer space. This mineral has only been found six times in history. This discovery could confirm the largest meteorite crater ever found in Australia

The ultra-rare mineral known as reidite is found deep inside the long-buried Woodleigh Crater, near the Shark Bay area, about 750 kilometers north of Perth. Reidite only forms under extreme stress that occurs when rocks from space hit the Earth's crust.

This is the sixth time this mineral has been found on Earth. Superintendent of research at Curtin University, Aaron Cavosie, said Reidite started living as a mineral-circon that was far more common - and only turned into Reidite during impact pressure."Finding Reidite at Woodleigh is quite surprising because it is far rarer than diamonds or gold, though unfortunately it is worthless" he said.

These findings indicate that the Woodleigh Crater may be much larger than previously estimated and could reveal further as the largest impact crater in Australia. Woodleigh has long been buried under younger sedimentary rocks, so its size is unknown and remains hotly debated.
