News24xx.com - Air pollution has been linked to various risks of disease. Most recently, air pollution is associated with an increased risk of oral cancer. The study, published in the Journal of Investigate Medicine, explains how researchers found an association between air pollution levels and oral cancer risk.

The study looked at air pollution data from 66 air quality monitoring stations collected in 2009. Researchers also combed data from medical records of more than 480 thousand people aged 40 years and over from 2012 to 2013. As a result, 11,617 have oral cancer.

In its study, researchers focused on small particles of air pollution known as PM2.5. Researchers studied the level of human exposure to pollution based on their place of residence. Researchers divided participants into four groups, from the lowest to highest exposure levels.

After taking into account other factors including age, ozone exposure, smoking status, and eating habits of materials at risk of increasing oral cancer, the researchers found that those who were exposed to the highest PM2.5 levels have a considerable risk of oral cancer.
