News24xx.com -  A status that posted on Facebook can to predict whether users are experiencing depression or not.

As quoted from NBC News, Monday, October 22 2018, the researchers found several words used could indicate if they were diagnosed with depression.

According to Johannes Eichstadedt from the University of Pennsylvania, people who experience depression use the word 'me' more, as well as words that reflect sadness, loneliness, or hostility.

"We observed that users who eventually had depression using more first-person pronouns showed self-preoccupation," he said.

Johannes's research team conducted a survey of 683 people in patients in the emergency room to see their Facebook page, and as many as 114 had depression conditions in their medical records.

In these observations, words like tears, crying, pain, longing, hate and 'ugh', are more commonly posted by patients who have a track record of depression.

Besides Facebook, another group of researchers reported in 2017, Instagram users who are depressed tend to post pictures and photos with black and white themes.

"Developers and application policy makers should need to overcome the challenges of implementing certain algorithms that can detect social media posts that might trigger depression so they can get treatment," he concluded.

Until now, cases of suicide due to depression are still common. Therefore, it is better to be more sensitive to those who are detected as having depression to get further treatment.
