3 kinds of martial art from Indonesia,other than Pencak Silat

News24xx.com - Indonesia’s most popular martial art is pencak silat. Pencak silat is also popular among foreigners. It is even included in Asian Games and has 33 organizations in the world. However, there are actually other martial arts from Indonesia other than pencak silat.

1.       Tarung Derajat

Created by Achmad Dradjat, tarung derajat is a martial art that has been approved and recognized as national sport. Achmad Dradjat created it based on the street fights he experienced in 1960s in Bandung. It is even used as the basic training of National Army. The moves of tarung derajat include punch, kick, slam, and sweep of the foot.

2.       Silek Minangkabau

Silek Minangkabau actually means Minangkabau’s silat. It it a martial art that has been passed down for generations among the people of Minangkabau, West Sumatra. The people of Minangkabau learn this martial art to protect themselves when they go out of their hometown to wander. It is also used to protect their home from enemies.

3.       Mepantigan

Mepantigan is a martial art from Bali. It is often done on a muddy ground, so it is often called mud wrestling. In Balinese, “mepantigan” means slamming each other. Different from pencak silat, it mostly uses slamming and locking. It is now part of the attractions in Bali to attract tourists.
