20 people killed in explosion and attacks in Somali capital, Mogadishu

News24xx.com - About 20 people were killed and dozens were injured in a series of bomb blasts and armed attacks that rocked the Somali capital Mogadishu on Friday. The explosion and attack took place near the Sahafi hotel police headquarters and Criminal Investigation Division (CID).

A Somali security official, Abdulahi Ahmed said most of the victims were civilians. "The information we received that 20 people died and more than 40 others suffered injuries" he was quoted as saying by AFP on Saturday, November 10th 2018.

According to sources, casualties included the son of the hotel owner, Abdirashid Ilqeyte, who was killed in the Shabaab attack on the establishment in November 2015. Witnesses said the blast came from a suicide bomber. He blew up a vest loaded with explosives at the front entrance of the hotel, when three attackers in Somali military uniforms were shot at the back door.

Pro-Shabaab meanwhile, a network affiliated with Al-Qaeda via the website claimed responsibility for a series of explosions that took place in Mogadishu. "Armed members of Shabaab Al-Mujahideen did carry out a complex attack targeting Hotel Sahafi in Mogadishu where senior Somali government officials live" they said.
