News24xx.com - Recently, the European apparatus «Mars Express», which has been in orbit around Mars for 15 years, sent amazing photos of the Queen crater near the planet’s North Pole.

They confirmed that there are huge reserves of water on the Red Planet, which will be extremely useful for future researchers. This crater with a diameter is 81.4 km has a depth of more than 2 km below the average level of the planet's surface and therefore serves as a kind of cold air trap that descends and condenses the moisture contained in it. The ice layer in the crater reaches 1900 meters, and, presumably, it was deposited there for millions of years.

The volume of water ice contained in the crater is 2,200 cubic kilometers, but one part of it is mineral dust brought by the winds.

Earlier radar studies confirmed that the ice in the crater is water, not ice from carbon dioxide. In the northern regions of Mars there are several dozens of smaller meteor craters, partially filled with water ice.
