News24xx.com - The 7.5 magnitude earthquake that occurred in Palu, Central Sulawesi, in September 2018, surprised the scientists from NASA. Based on the latest study, the earthquake has the rupture speed of 14,760 km per hour!

The study, conducted by researchers at UCLA, NASA's Jet Propulsion (JPL) Laboratory in Pasadena, California, USA, revealed that the Palu earthquake has classified as rare earthquake, which only happened 15 times in geographic history. This was inseparable from the very fast and strong earthquake of Palu which had been identified by researchers.

Quoted from the NASA website, on Wednesday, February 6th 2019, when the earthquake hit the Central Sulawesi capital, cracks moved along the fault very quickly, triggering up and down or side-to-side waves that shook the ground and caused liquefaction. The vibrations that are created are much stronger than those in slower earthquakes.

Together with other institutions, NASA scientists analyzed it through high-spatial resolution observations of seismic waves caused by earthquakes, satellite radars and optical images. This method is needed to measure the speed, time and magnitude of the earthquake in Palu.

As a result, according to NASA, the Palu earthquake moved at a steady speed of 9,171 mph or around 14,760 km per hour in the main shock for almost one minute. Usually, the rupture speed of an earthquake is only around 5,600- 6,700 mph (9,000 - 10,800 km per hour).
