News24xx.com - A large female great white shark was caught by fishers off the coast of Taiwan and sold at fish market on Wednesday, March 20th. It turned out later that the shark was pregnant with a record 14 cubs.

The shark was 15 feet long, bigger than a small car. She was bought by Taiwanese taxidermy company. Her children were pulled out of her belly after that. The 14 sharks cubs looked like they were nearly fully developed, but stopped when their mother was killed.

The 14 cubs was a new record number for the species, according to David Ebert, the director of the Pacific Shark Research Center at Moss Landing Marine Laboratories in Moss Landing, California.

“It is very rare to catch a pregnant white shark, so at least they were able to document this with photographs,” Ebert said, as cited from Live Science.

According to George Burgess, the director of Florida Program for Shark Research at the University of Florida, the highest number of cubs a great white shark could have before this was 12.
