House of Representatives Commission urged the government to be more transparent about the Papua issue
News24xx.com - House of Representatives' (DPR) Commission I member Sukamta urged the government to be more transparent about the Papua issue. He said that it has been two weeks since the riots began, but there have been no significant developments regarding the situation.
"What is really happening there? Why is it not resolved yet? The government must be more transparent," the PKS politician said in a written statement, Thursday, August 29.
Sukamta asked the government to take a break from the issue of relocating the capital city and focus on solving the Papua problem first.
According to Sukamta, Papuan students rallies in several big cities, the rejection of Papua and East Java Governors by Papuan students in their dormitory, as well as the internet shutdown that is still enacted, indicate that the situations there are very serious.
"The government needs to change their approach; from being too soft to be more assertive, especially towards the behavior of armed terrorism," Sukamta said.
He added that the government needs to immediately take more substantive and careful steps to solve the problems in Papua.
From the reports of several studies in Papua, most of the respondents felt they have been treated unfairly and also marginalized due to the presence of migrants.
The recent conflict began with criticism of racism against Papuan students in Surabaya. This incident ignited the emotions of the people of Papua. On Monday, August 19, the anger spilled onto the streets of Manokwari and Sorong, West Papua.
The West Papua DPRD building became the target of mass tantrums who burned the building. To date, the government is still looking for ways to restore the situations. The governors of Papua and East Java had tried to meet and have dialogues with students at the dormitory, but they were rejected.
