1.Dark Chocolate
Probably the most alluring food item in the list, dark chocolate is more than just a comfort food. It boosts serotonin levels and reduces blood pressure. It further produces a good amount of antioxidants in the body in the form of flavonols and polyphenols. But remember to have it in small quantity so as to not consume too much sugar.
2.Asparagus
Asparagus is a rich source of folate. A study involving 2608 adults found out that people who consumed a good amount of folate had a lower risk of depression than those who consumed the least amount.
3.Avocados
Not many people know that avocados have more folate than any other fruit. They further contain healthy fats and potent antioxidants such as glutathione, lutein, beta-carotene, and vitamin E, which fight cell-damaging free radicals. Although they are a bit high in calorie content, few thin slices in a sandwich or a salad is all one needs for it to do its trick.
4.Berries
Berries are an excellent source of vitamin C, a vitamin which is known for its stress relieving properties. Many studies done with taking school students as their subjects have found that vitamin C greatly reduces anxiety levels in them. Studies have further found that vitamin C reduces anxiety levels in people suffering from type 2 diabetes.
5.Chamomile tea
Two studies from the University of Pennsylvania study have proved that chamomile tea is a tried, true, and tested way to help achieve a sense of calm. In the original study conducted in 2009, 57 adults with anxiety and depression were given either chamomile extract or placebo for a period of 8 weeks and there was a visible reduction in their anxiety levels of the people. who were given chamomile extract.
6.Oatmeal
Oatmeal is an easy to prepare, healthy meal that prompts the brain to produce the calming neurotransmitter called serotonin. One can pair up oatmeal with a handful of fresh berries to double the soothing power.
7.Green leafy vegetables
Green leafy vegetables like kale, spinach, Swiss chard, mustard greens, and others leafy greens are excellent sources of folate and magnesium, another calming nutrient. A salad with leafy greens, asparagus, and a few slices of avocado will be a healthy and excellent stress-reducing entree in your hands.
