SURABAYA - Environmental NGO Ecoton together with a number of environmental activist groups conducted research on human feces. The study found the presence of microplastics in almost all samples studied.

In this connection, the public is asked to reduce the use of plastic and pay attention to the consumed food.

Environmental NGO researcher Ecoton (Ecological Observation and Wetlands Conservation) Andreas Agus Kristanto Nugroho said, microplastics not only threatens the environment and fish in waters, but also becomes a serious threat to humans.

From a study of about 40 human feces samples from various regions in Bali and Java, none of the samples studied were free from microplastic contamination. The shape is diverse; fragments, fibers, filaments, and granules. In the 10 grams feces studied in the laboratory, there are about 2 to 15 microplastic particles per millimeter.

Meanwhile, Environmental Health Lecturer, Faculty of Public Health, Jember University, Anita Dewi Moelyaningrum said, microplastics can enter the human body mainly through food and beverages that are exposed to microplastics.

Microplastics can get out of the human body through feces, but can also accumulate in organs and  cause various health problems.
