Mekar Sari Village's Agricultural Extension Workers Repu Sago Becomes Animal Feed

Head of PPL of Mekar Sari Village, Merbau District, Junaidi Asira said the idea of ??making animal feed from Repu arose because of his desire to help the community in providing alternative animal feed and see the growing accumulation of waste from the sago industry.

"The volume of waste can be reduced through productive processing. Not only that, another positive impact is that it can become a business opportunity and absorb labor" he said.

To process it into animal feed, Junaidi explained, the repu was first drained to reduce water content. Furthermore, the raw material is mixed with trash fish and then ground using a machine.

It is said by utilizing waste into animal feed can reduce nearly 60 percent of the feed needs for chicken farmers.

"Utilization of sago waste is very beneficial for chicken farmers that can meet 60 percent of their feed needs. Even though we have abundant sago potential and waste that does not decompose and accumulate in the river," Junaidi said.

To process animal feed from sago waste, Junaidi said he had obtained a machine from the Riau Agricultural Technology Assessment Center (BPTP), before he worked manually.

"Making animal feed from repu has long been taught by parents. Starting from there we proposed this innovation to BPTP, their response was very good, so we were given facilities in the form of processing machines since mid-2019 then" said Junaidi.

It is said, currently animal feed from Repu has entered into BPTP research. Where there are other organic mixtures with certain quantities such as mixed with coffee skins, corn, and boiler feed, in addition repu must be fermented first.

"If from the results of BPTP research there are other organic mixtures. However, what we make is a 10 kg non fermented repu mixed with trash fish as much as 1 kg, that's all poultry such as chicken and ducks are already eating it," he said again.

For the price, the PPL chairman said the price was far cheaper than the price of feed sold.

"If we count, the price of feed that we make is very cheap with the price of feed sold in the market. The capital is only IDR 1,800 and the selling price can be IDR 3000. When compared to corn for feed the price is IDR 8 thousand especially PUR which costs IDR 9 thousand per kilogram. "he added.
