News24xx.com - A woman from South Carolina was sentenced to 25 years in prison after she admitted her husband's poisoning by shedding tears in his drinking water.

In a plea agreement, Lana Sue Clayton, 53, pleaded guilty to intentional murder in the death of Steven Clayton, 64, at their home in Clover, near Charlotte.

She is accused of poisoning her husband by mixing her drinking water with eye drops between 19 and 21 July 2018.

Initially, the husband was thought to have died of natural causes but the autopsy toxicology report showed toxic tetrahydrozoline levels, which were found in eye drops.

Based on the prosecutor's statement, it turns out that in 2016 the woman also shot her husband in the back of the head with an automatic arrow.

However, the incident was only declared as an accident.

While admitting her actions, the woman claimed that her husband had abused her

"I impulsively put Visine in Stephen's drink and I did it with the intent to make him sick and uncomfortable. I was upset with the abuse and just wanted him to leave me alone," Clayton, wearing an orange prison jumpsuit, told the court the WBTV video showed.

"I never thought it would kill him."

Clayton, a woman who is a former nurse at the Department of Veterans Affairs, said that she got the idea to use eye drops because the liquid was tasteless, colorless and odorless. In the movies he watched, the things he did would only cause victims of diarrhea.

But prosecutors say she killed her husband for money because she was also known to have burned her husband's will.

Clayton was arrested in August 2018 and charged with murder.
