Studies show that smiling can lift a person's mood, reduce stress, boost the immune system, and may even prolong life.

Dr. Isha Gupta, a neurologist from IGEA Brain and Spine, explains that smiles stimulate chemical reactions in the brain, releasing certain hormones, including dopamine and serotonin.

"Dopamine increases our happy feelings. Serotonin release is associated with reduced stress. Low serotonin levels are associated with depression and aggression, "Dr Gupta said.

A Los Angeles otolaryngologist, Murray Grossan, who studies psychoneuroimmunology (the study of how the brain is connected to the immune system), says depression weakens the body's immunity, while happiness actually increases endurance.

"The great thing is that just acting like a smile can make a difference in building your body's immunity," Grossan said.

"When smiling, the brain sees muscle activity and assumes that humor is happening," he continued.

Researchers at the University of Kansas have also published findings that smiling helps reduce the body's response to stress and reduces heart rate in tense situations.

Whereas several other studies link smiling to low blood pressure and show that smiling leads to longevity.
