News24xx.com - The Ministry of Agrarian Affairs and Spatial Planning wants to assess spatial plans for Jabodetabek after the extensive flooding that hit parts of the capital on Tuesday.

Budi Situmorang, director general of the ministry's land use and land control, said officials were "racing against time" to audit spatial plans from "upstream to downstream", adding that uphill areas in Greater Jakarta were particularly problematic due to the construction of villas.

"We want to replant in the upstream area together with the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, because our requirement is that the villa can only occupy 20 percent of the total spatial plan," Budi said in a statement. "We will dismantle [the villa] if the amount exceeds the limit."

Budi said the density of buildings in Jabodetabek had clogged up many water catchment areas in the area, causing the river to overflow due to continuous rain and often resulting in flooding.

"Rain [on Tuesday] was very heavy, but many water catchment areas were closed because of buildings. Thus, the drainage system does not function properly. "

The ministry also cooperates with the Directorate General of Water Resources at the Ministry of Public Works and Housing, said Budi. "Regions in Bogor and Depok used to have large lakes, but the latter has gradually diminished, so we are working together to prevent further reductions."

The Ministry will identify and demolish buildings, especially those built without permits, in several locations in Jakarta under Law No. 24/2007 concerning disaster management.

Jabodetabek was hit by the fourth major flood this year on Tuesday morning after heavy overnight rainfall.

According to PetaBencana.id, the website of the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) for real-time flood information, 87 locations throughout Jakarta were flooded by flooding on Tuesday, which paralyzed parts of the capital and disrupted transportation.
