News24xx.com - Snow has fallen in Ain Safra, a small town in Algeria for the third time in four decades, with snow thickness up to 40cm and covering the city's sand. Known, the snow came after a strange storm on Sunday.

People were stunned as the snow began to fall on the red sand dunes.

A photographer named Karim Bouchetata said: "We were really surprised when we woke up and saw more snow and started melting around 17:00 in the evening".

Last year, the city that known as 'The Gateway to the Desert' saw thick snow shortly after Christmas and this caused chaos, as many passengers were stranded on the bus after the road became slippery and ice-cold.

Many children make snowmen.

Before that, the last snow was seen in Ain Sefra on February 18, 1979, when a snowstorm lasted only half an hour.

A spokesman for the Meteorological Office said: "Cold air was pulled south to North Africa over the weekend as a result of high pressure in Europe."

"High pressure means the cold weather extends southward than usual."

Ain Sefra about 1000 meters above sea level and surrounded by the Atlas Mountains.
