News24xx.com - After been swiming in Warleigh Weir, This 26-year-old man was rushed to the hospital. Billy-Joe Humphries is infected with rat urine or so-called leptospirosis. Leptospirosis, also known as Weil disease, is a rare infection spread by animal urine including rats, cows, pigs and dogs.

"Be careful to all my friends and family, I went to Warleigh Weir in Bath for a swim, the next morning I woke up with severe flu symptoms" he was quoted as saying by DailyMail.

Other symptoms that are felt are fever, headache, muscle and joint pain, red eyes, and loss of appetite.

Serious cases of infection can cause the skin and eyes to become yellow, the ankles or hands become swollen, chest pain, shortness of breath, or even coughing up blood. "I have been given tablets and antibiotics for chest and lung infections" Billy said.

Without treatment, the infection takes several months to recover, and worse can cause kidney and liver failure and can be life-threatening.

According to data from the UK Health Service (NHS) 90 percent of cases of leptospirosis are mild, between 5-15 percent develop into severe forms that can lead to organ failure and even death. Between one and five percent of cases is fatal.
