US scientists believe that the immune system of Covid-19 patients with mild symptoms who recover lasts for at least three months or even more.
The team of scientists tested blood samples on 15 Covid-19 patients with mild symptoms to track three indications of a long-term immune response.
The antibodies, respectively, are called memory B-cells and memory T-cells.
“Three months after recovering, former Covid-19 patients still have all three layers of body defense reducing their risk of being re-infected with the coronavirus,” Lauren Rodda of the University of Washington School of Medicine, one of the study’s authors, told Reuters.
“If they are also reinfected, the symptoms are likely to be mild and not become a vector of infection,” added Rodda.
The test results of the recovered Covid-19 patient, at the third month, showed no change from the results of the first month’s test.
Therefore, the research team from the University of Washington School of Medicine believes, there is a long-term immune response.
Research by Chinese scientists on 349 Covid-19 patients last month also confirmed similar results to research in the US.
Patients who recover showed that the immune response pattern persisted even for 6 months, regardless of symptoms, mild or severe.
The results of other research showed that Covid-19 patients with severe symptoms, who were given blood plasma treatment containing antibodies from recovered patients, had a significantly lower risk of dying from the disease.
Recent data from studies across the US are expected to better detail the administration of so-called “convalescent plasma”.
In a report released via the online platform medRxiv, the researchers concluded that although the research was conducted not following a standard randomized trial, the results were positive.
The findings provide additional evidence that the quality and mode of administration of plasma antibodies from recovered patients may reduce the mortality rate for other Covid-19 patients.
