News24xx.com -  Tommy Smith, Liverpool legend and former Reds captain has died aged 74.

His family has confirmed that the defender died after a battle with dementia.

Smith earned icon status at Anfield as the skipper during a remarkable period of success for Liverpool in the sixties and seventies. Smith won four First Division titles, two FA Cups, one European Cup, two UEFA Cups and the UEFA Super Cup with his boyhood club. And he got nicknamed the ‘Anfield Iron’.


Smith’s daughter Janette Simpson told the Liverpool Echo, "Dad died very peacefully in his sleep shortly after 4.30pm at Green Heyes Nursing home in Park Road, Waterloo, Crosby. "

Smith played for Liverpool for 18 years, making 638 appearances for the club, placing the Liverpudlian eighth on the all-time appearance list for the Reds.
