IllustrationIllustration - Egg is one of the most wasted foods throughout the year. Recent research in the UK has even shown that 720 million eggs are wasted every year. Studies conducted by the application of food waste Too Good to Go revealed that hundreds of millions of eggs were wasted causing the loss of GBP 139 million per year.

This finding also found 29 percent of households in the UK removed eggs because they have passed the best consumption date, even though they are still safe to eat. The European Union Law stipulates that the maximum date of consumption for eggs is 28 days after hatching.

However, in 2011, the food regulatory agency stated that consumers do not need to remove the eggs if they exceeded the best consumption date because actually the eggs are still good to consume until two days after that.

"If you throw your eggs in the trash based on ita expiration date, you have thrown away the very good food" said Too Good To Go founder Jamie Crummie, quoted by The Independent. In addition, the study also found that only 23 percent of the people who knew how to check eggs were still fresh and safe for consumption.
