Iranian court sentenced a 10 years imprisonment to Iranian woman for spying for British government


The Iranian womanThe Iranian woman - An Iranian court sentenced its own citizen to 10 years in prison on espionage charges. This Iranian woman was found guilty of spying for Britain. "An Iranian who is in charge of managing the Iranian desk at the British Council and cooperating with British intelligence services ... is sentenced to 10 years in prison after a clear confession" said spokesman for the Iranian judicial authority Gholamhossein Esmaili, as reported by Reuters on Monday, May 13th 2019.

The identity of Iranian woman who was sentenced to 10 years in prison is not told to the public. Esmaili said that the woman was a student in England before being recruited by the British Council. Esmaili said that the woman in charge of managing the 'cultural infiltration' project in Iran. The woman has been detained for almost 1 year. Iranian authorities do not mention further whether the Iranian woman also has British citizenship status or not.

There have been no comments from the British Foreign Ministry regarding this verdict. It is known that the British Council is a body of British culture abroad. The arrests of Iranian related to espionage have increased since last year, when Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei called the existence of "infiltration" by Western agents in Iran. Iran's relation with Western countries indeed is getting worse, especially after the United States (US) withdraws from Iran's nuclear agreement.
