A Belgian cyclist has died on the operating table after a horror crash during the Tour of Poland

News24xx.com - A Belgian cyclist, aged just 22, has died on the operating table after a horror crash during the Tour of Poland yesterday.  Bjorg Lambrecht crashed into a concrete culvert in the final 100km of the third stage of the race from Chorzow to Zabrzewhere.

That riders faced heavy rains during the stage which created dangerous conditions which saw two other crashes.  He was taken to hospital after being resuscitated but his team Lotto-Soudal confirmed he passed away today.

Lambrecht's vital functions were restored at hospital but he then died during surgery, according to The Sun.

Lotto-Soudal tweeted: 'The biggest tragedy possible that could happen to the family, friends and teammates of Bjorg has happened... Rest in peace Bjorg.'

The Tour of Poland confirmed the news on their Twitter account.

The statement read, "There are no words to describe this tragedy. Bjorg Lambrecht passed away following an accident on today's stage."

Lambrecht was in his second season at the top level of professional cycling and was considered one of Belgium's most promising riders. He finished second in the U23 World Championships last year. The news comes just weeks after British Tour de France winner, Chris Froome was seriously injured in a 40mph crash. He suffered a fractured femur, a fractured elbow and broken ribs.
