European Union Attempts to Reconcile Israel-Palestine, America Throws Tantrum by Supporting Jewish Development in Palestine

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo previously said that building Jewish settlements in the West Bank did not violate international law.

The Vatican considers peace between Israel and Palestine to be more risky due to this latest US stance.

The Holy See supports Israel's right to live in peace and security in a territory recognized by the international community.

"The Vatican also supports equal rights for the Palestinian people, which must be recognized, respected and applied," the statement said.

Earlier Foreign Minister Pompeo said that US statements about settlements in the West Bank, the territory annexed by Israel in 1967, had been mistaken.

With this support, Pompeo continued, the US released a wrong establishment which had been held for 40 years. The establishment which states that the construction of settlements was not in accordance with international law. His statement reversed the position adopted by the US since the leadership of president Jimmy Carter in 1978.

In contrast, European Union foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini said the European Union's position on resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict remained unchanged.

It said Jewish settlements in the occupied West Bank area were illegal under international law.

"Israeli settlement policies erode the continuity of the two-state solution and the prospect of lasting peace," he said.
