News24xx.com - A severe cold storm killed at least 17 people in Afghanistan on Saturday (11 January 2020). This was revealed by Afghan government officials as heavy snowfall and rain continued to hit parts of the country.

Reporting from Reuters, Afghanistan is already no stranger to extreme winter weather, where various warring groups in the country have historically stopped hostilities.

However, according to the country's winter meteorology department, this year is very extreme.

Officials say the death toll could increase further. The Afghanistan Natural Disaster Management Authority is still trying to total the number of victims.

Saturday's death brought the toll from this year's cold to at least 24, because temperatures in some parts of the country dropped to minus 12 degrees Celsius (10 Fahrenheit).

Heavy snow has blocked many major roads since the New Year, including the Salang Tunnel connecting central Afghanistan with the north of the country, and the Kabul-Kandahar highway.
