Nariz del Diablo is a railroad in Ecuador, South America. This railroad line is in the Andes Mountains. Imagine the beauty of the Andes, right?

This line was built in 1895, the President of Ecuador at that time, Eloy Alfaro planned the construction of a railroad line from the coastal city of Guayaqui to the Capital of Ecuador, Quito. The distance between the two cities is more than 400 km, with Guayaqui's position south of Quito.

Contractors from the United States were brought in to work on this project. Once this news reaches the public, development is opposed.

Ecuadorians believe that the Andes Mountains have a 'watchman', so it will be difficult to conquer. In addition, residents also do not want if later the Andes Mountains are damaged due to the construction of the railroad.

However, the President continued to strive to continue to build the train line of his dreams. Slowly but surely, the railroad tracks are strung up to the most difficult point, Nariz del Diablo.

Nariz del Diablo means devil's nose. The name was given because this point is a steep cliff, shaped perpendicularly like a nose.

Because of the contours like that, the contractors were dizzy. Various methods are used, such as one by blasting the land with dynamite in order to make a series of railroad lines.

On the other hand, local people have other beliefs. They believe, that Nariz del Diablo is an area where humans are forbidden to approach. Especially if it destroys it, then disaster will arise and be paid for with human lives!

Sure enough, the railroad line which was completed in 1902 has a dark record. There are around 2,000 workers killed during completing this route.

The workers died for various reasons, some were affected by landslides, dengue fever, storms and others. For the local people, again they believe the death of the workers was due to the angry watchman Nariz del Diablo.

The train track turned out to last a long time, until at least 1997. Because in that year, there was a fairly large El Nino storm, and was hoarding all the train tracks. Only 12 km left from Alausi to Sibambe.

The remaining path turns to the nose of the devil. Now Ecuador opens this route as a railroad tour managed by the Ecuador trend operator.

The price offered is USD 33 or around IDR 500 thousand per person. If the Corona pandemic outbreak is over, this tourist train with views of Mount Andes can be included in your bucket list.
