500 Chinese Foreign Workers will arrive in the near future, Coordinating Minister for Marine Affairs: To Speed Up Construction Progress
JAKARTA - Around the end of June or early July there will be 500 foreign workers (TKA) from China will again invade Indonesia.
This was conveyed by the Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs and Investment through its spokesperson, Jodi Mahardi.

According to him, their arrival in order to accelerate the construction of smelters with RKEF technology from China.
said Jodi, RKEF technology can build economically, quickly, and have good environmental standards, as well as producers of nickel downstream products that can compete in the international market.
However, the planned presence of 500 Chinese TKA was mentioned as if shifting Indonesian workers.
"Why do you need the foreign worker in question? Because they are part of the construction team that will accelerate the construction of the smelter. After the smelter is finished, the TKA will return to their respective countries. At the time of the operation, the majority of the workforce came from local areas, "said Jodi Mahardi in a written statement in Jakarta, as quoted from Fajar.co.id (05/29/2020).

Jodi then gave an example of Morowali Industrial Park (IMIP) in Morowali, Central Sulawesi, which now has a majority in full operation, employing 39,500 local workers and 5,500 TKA.
"So the number of foreign workers is around 12 percent of the total workforce, I am sure that if the smelter construction process has just been completed, the numbers will go down," Jodi explained.
While in Weda Bay, the number of workers reached 8,900 people, with details of 7,700 local workers and 1,200 foreign workers. and currently most are still in the construction phase.
Whereas the Virtue Dragon Industrial Zone in Konawe, Southeast Sulawesi, has a total workforce of 11,790 people with a composition of 11,084 Indonesian workers and 706 Chinese TKA.
"So if you add 500 foreign workers to accelerate the progress of construction so that it can operate quickly so that local workers can be absorbed more, is that something wrong? So the foreign workers who come here are not taking jobs from local workers, but rather to accelerate the absorption of local workers, because when they start operating, the local workforce will be the majority, "he said.
Jodi said, job creation was the top priority of the government. He requested that it not be reversed with misleading information.
Jodi claims, what the government is doing now is a consistent implementation of the spirit of the Minerba Law which prohibits the export of raw minerals issued by the previous government.
"The current government is executing. The result, besides absorption of local labor as I have explained, is export foreign exchange. In 2014, exports of steel and iron as a downstream nickel product were only US $ 1.1 billion, in 2019 the figure jumped to US $ 7.2 billion, "he said.
Nickel is considered to be one of the opportunities to transform the economy because Indonesia has the largest nickel reserves in the world, and the mineral is also widely used in industry.
In addition to stainless steel, nickel is also the main ingredient of lithium batteries which are the main component of electric cars and almost all electronic equipment that requires batteries.
"What we need is a downstream investment in this sector. This is what we are currently pushing. Starting in 2014, investment in the downstream nickel sector for stainless steel began to flow, in line with the ban on nickel ore exports, "he stressed.
Jodi asserted, the government was trying to downstream materials for lithium batteries requiring human resources to be prepared early.
Jodi said that this year there would be 500 students sent with a target of 3,000 people up to 2024 for the S-1, S-2, S-3 and vocational programs. The shipment will be carried out after restriction normalization due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
"Later, more human resources will get vocational training or continue higher education and get a transfer of knowledge and transfer of technology that will benefit Indonesia to leap frog in the future development of the industry," Jodi said.
