Is Wearing Masks Too Long Dangerous? Here's the Expert Explanation


IllustrationIllustration - Doctors in Dubai have eliminated public concerns about the dangers of wearing face masks for a long time as business activity continues and residents are returning to their workplaces.

The suggestion came a day after the authorities issued new guidelines about who should wear a mask, where, and when. On Saturday, the Supreme Committee for Crisis and Disaster Management in Dubai, led by His Excellency Sheikh Mansour Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, announced that all members of the public must wear face masks outside their homes at all times, with a few exceptions.

However, not all office visitors are comfortable wearing masks continuously for nine-10 hours. Gulf News took the initiative to conduct interviews with specialist doctors to ascertain the implications of prolonged mask use. Dr Salvin George, Specialist - Internal Medicine from Medicare Hospital, Al Safa, and Dr. Ali Anwar, said that the concern was wrong. Here's the reason:

There is no serious danger of wearing a face mask, although some people may have difficulty breathing and become weak after wearing the mask for hours. They tend to touch their faces often, which needs to be avoided during the COVID-19 crisis. So far there have been no documented case studies on this effect.

However, disposable masks must be replaced every four-five hours or if they become moist. Reusable fabric masks must be washed every day before use. Respirators, of course, last for 24 hours.
