News24xx.com - "He might not be able to survive tonight. His condition suddenly worsened," Dr Saswati Sinha told a patient's wife by telephone as he headed back to the hospital through a quiet street in the city of Kolkata, India.

The conversation took place on April 11 evening. India was in a period of lockdown, or regional quarantine, to prevent the spread of the new coronavirus.

Dr Sinha's statement concerns the fate of a patient named Nitaidas Mukherjee. He has fought against Covid-19 for almost two weeks at AMRI Hospital in Kolkata, where Dr. Sinha works as a critical care consultant.

Mukherjee works as a social worker for a non-profit organization that helps homeless people and poor citizens, infected with the coronavirus. The 52-year-old man struggles for his life in critical care so that his respiratory tract is assisted by a ventilator.

Previously, he arrived at the hospital on the night of March 30. At that time he experienced symptoms of high fever difficulty breathing.

From the X-ray examination, Mukherjee's condition looked "very bad". His lungs appear white due to being flooded with inflamed cells. White liquid seen when X-rayed. The air sacs are filled with fluid that blocks the flow of oxygen to the body's organs.

That night, the doctor used a high-flow mask to increase his oxygen level, gave him diabetes medication, and took a swab in the throat for the Covid-19 test.

The following night, Mukherjee reported positive contracting COVID-19.

That's when he was sedated and put on a ventilator. He did not wake up again until three weeks later. In fact, it took even longer before Mukherjee was free of breathing aids.

One night in April, the situation got worse.

His fever soared, his heart rate dropped, and his blood pressure dropped dramatically. All of these show symptoms of a new infection.

Dr Saswati Sinha said the struggle to save Mukherjee was a very tiring experience.

Dr Sinha and his team gave a powerful antibiotic as the final choice to kill infections directly into his veins, along with additional muscle relaxants and drugs to stabilize blood pressure.

Finally, a month after being treated, Mukherjee showed signs of beating infection.

He woke up from a medically induced coma.

"I don't know what's going on. Everything is unclear. I saw a woman with a blue apron standing in front of me, who I later learned was my doctor," Mukherjee told the BBC.

"You know, I slept well for more than three weeks. I don't know why I was lying in hospital. It was a lost memory.

"But I remember something. I thought I was hallucinating when I was in a coma. I was locked up somewhere, tied a rope, and people told me that I was not healthy, and they took money from my family, and I was not released. And I'm desperately trying to contact people to help me. "

At the end of April, doctors removed him from the ventilator for half an hour and Mukherjee was breathing on his own for the first time in almost a month. The process is not easy. Doctors said Mukherjee often experienced "panic" and pressed the emergency bell beside the bed because he thought he would not be able to breathe without the machine.

On May 3, they turned off the ventilator, and five days later, they sent it home.

"The process was very long. He had severe ARDS. He had a high fever for four weeks. He could not breathe alone. The virus was disastrous," said Dr Sinha.

Now at home, Mukherjee starts a new life.

He started walking again without help. Even some of his memories returned.

He had coughed for several days before being taken to the hospital and had visited a doctor who diagnosed him as a throat infection. At that time, he was still working, wearing a mask, helping the poor and destitute from the streets.
