Had Conflict, Now India and China Want to Resolve Border Disputes Peacefully
India and China have agreed to settle their joint border disputes in the Ladakh region through "peaceful" diplomatic channels, according to India's foreign affairs ministry.
The statement on Friday came a day before key generals from the two countries will meet near the site of their border standoff to try and find ways to worsen the situation, which began when India accused Chinese forces of entering its territory three times in May.
Indian officials say the two sides will first focus on getting Indian troops and the Chinese People's Liberation Army to withdraw additional troops and equipment to their positions before May.

Soldiers from both countries have camped in the Galwan Valley in the Ladakh highlands, and have exchanged accusations of violating disputed boundaries, triggering a brief but bloody war in 1962.
Overall, China claims around 90,000 sq km (34,750 sq sq) area in northeast India. India says China occupies 38,000 square kilometers (14.67 square miles) of territory on the Aksai Chin plateau in the western Himalayas, including parts of the Ladakh region.
Senior officials of the two countries held a video conference and agreed that "the two parties must deal with their differences through peaceful discussions" and must not allow them to become disputes, the foreign ministry statement said.

In Beijing, Geng Shuang, a spokesman for China's foreign ministry, told reporters the overall situation in the China-India border region was "stable and under control."
While maintaining close communication through diplomatic and military channels, the two sides are working to "solve the relevant problem correctly", the spokesman said, according to a statement posted on the Chinese foreign ministry website.
Both India and China agreed that a peaceful, stable and balanced relationship between India and China would be positive for stability in the current global situation, the Indian statement said.
