News24xx.com - A 13-year-old girl was killed and three of her siblings were hurt during a violent carjacking Sunday afternoon in California, authorities said.

The victims’ parents were picking up food at a restaurant in Pico Rivera around 2 p.m, when a criminal jumped into the vehicle and told the children to get out. As soon as he drove away, the side doors of the van slid open, making the situation even more dangerous for the children.

According to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, the man, who’s now in custody on multiple charges.

An 18-year-old sibling tried fighting with the driver before she jumped out of the vehicle, Hall said. 

She and an 11-year-old brother who also jumped from the van sustained minor injuries, according to the sheriff’s office.

Moments later, an 8-year-old boy was ejected from the vehicle and suffered serious injuries.

The remaining child in the vehicle, a 13-year-old identified as Isabella Cortes, was ejected immediately after that. She struck an unspecified object outside and died at the scene, authorities said.

The suspect, 26-year-old Jose Aguilar, eventually crashed into another car a few miles away and tried to steal another car, Hall said. But the man was stopped and detained by several bystanders until police arrived and took him into custody.

Aguilar was on probation for other criminal charges and had recently been released on bail for felony possession of a dagger and vandalism, according to local news station KABC.
