Built as a Cathedral in the Christian Byzantine Empire, Hagia Sophia is Officially a Mosque, This is the Explanation of Endorgan
News24xx.com - Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has rejected criticism and criticism from around the world for Turkey's decision to turn the Hagia Sophia into a mosque. Erdogan said Hagia Sophia's decision to become a mosque represented the country's desire to exercise sovereign rights.
As reported by the AFP news agency on Saturday (11 July 2020). Erdogan drew criticism from a number of countries and institutions for announcing that Hagia Sophia was converted into a mosque starting on July 24.
Erdogan has repeatedly called for the magnificent building to be renamed a mosque and in 2018 he read a verse from the Koran at the Hagia Sophia.
As an attraction for tourists around the world, the Hagia Sophia was first built as a cathedral in the Christian Byzantine Empire but was converted into a mosque after the Ottoman conquest of Constantinople in 1453.

Erdogan's announcement came after a high court overturned a 1934 cabinet decision under modern Turkish founder Mustafa Kemal Ataturk to preserve the Hagia Sophia which was converted from church to mosque into a museum.
Erdogan then signed the president's decision to hand over control of the 'Hagia Sophia Mosque' to the Turkish directorate of religious affairs, Diyanet.
"We made this decision not looking at what other people said but seeing what our rights were and what our country wanted, like what we had done in Syria, in Libya and elsewhere," the Turkish leader said.
Previously, the government of the United States (US) said that it was 'disappointed' with Turkey's decision to change the Byzantine-era monument, Hagia Sophia back into a mosque. The US also urges equal access for all visitors.
"We understand that the Turkish government remains committed to maintaining access to Hagia Sophia for all visitors, and hopes to hear about its plans to continue managing Hagia Sophia to ensure that it remains accessible without obstacles to all," he added.
Besides the US, other countries also oppose Turkey's decision to turn the Hagia Sophia into a mosque. Criticism also came from Greece which called the decision 'an open provocation for the whole civilized world'.
