California is one of the US states most affected by the Corona pandemic. The announcement was made following a surge in the COVID-19 case in one of California's oldest prisons, San Quentin.

The number of Corona cases at the San Quentin prison facility this week reached half of the active Corona cases in prisons throughout the state, which has a total prison population of around 113,000 prisoners.
