News24xx.com - Fifty years ago, Mario Palazzetti designed the ABS braking system that helped reduce car accidents. Now he has found a device that he hopes will curb the spread of COVID-19.

At the age of 84, the retired Fiat Research Center Engineer known as Mr. ABS has designed an electric kettle-sized device that creates local airflow. This device can stop the circulation of droplets that are released when people talk.

"We call it Biostopper and it is used to create aerodynamic spaces, so that all the breath that someone exerts when talking back to them," he explained.

Palazzetti began working on the device two months ago and hopes to help overcome difficulties in keeping a distance at schools, offices, bars, restaurants and other public places.

In this project, he worked with the team at the Politecnico di Torino to perfect and test the product.

"I cannot tell you so many technical details because we are still in the patent stage," Professor Marco Simonetti from the Politecnico energy department told Reuters.

"The concept is simple, the aim is not to kill the virus, but to reduce the risk of transmission from distance between people," he added.

Biostopper was originally designed to allow two people to get closer without fear of exposure to droplets. After being developed it turned out that this tool could be used by small groups.

In the original plan, this tool could be placed on a restaurant table so as to allow two people to eat together with a very small risk of contracting. This tool is claimed to be able to create a kind of 'barrier' droplet, namely by returning the flow of air released by someone to himself.
