Quoted in Bored Panda, Russell suffered from Down Syndrome. This is a genetic condition that is only found in about 1 in every 700 newborns in America every year. In 1984, when he was 18 years old, Jobsupport helped him to find work at McDonald's in Northmead.

Jobsupport is an Australian government initiative that helps people with intellectual disabilities to get paid jobs. For years Russell became a local celebrity, because many people came to visit him at the work place and greeted him when they met him on the road. Kate also said, "We get regular customers who come only to meet Russell on Thursday and Friday. So of course we will miss him."
