Hong Kong government will test its sophisticated technology on its prisons

News24xx.com - The Hong Kong government is testing a number of technologies to be implemented in prisons, which are said to be able to monitor prisoners better. Reported by the South China Morning Post, on Friday, February 15th 2019, Commissioner of Correctional Services, Danny Woo Ying-min claimed the technology could monitor the abnormal behavior of prisoners, prevent inmates from hurting others, and operate prisons more efficiently.

This smart prison consists of several separate technologies, including the tracker bracelet which will be used by inmates. This bracelet can monitor location, activity, including the heartbeat of inmates. In a number of other facilities it will also be equipped with CCTV systems that identify abnormal behavior, fights, and attempted suicide. Then there are also robots which worth of USD 125 thousand which have task to check the presence of drugs in inmate’s feces.

Although it aims to maintain the security of prisoners, the technology that will be implemented is also considered to be too interfere with prisoners' privacy. For example, the CCTV will also be installed in the bathroom, and even if they are not monitored by the camera, inmates can still be monitored through the bracelet they have to use.

High technology has also been previously tested in prisons in the United States. It was recently discovered that they recorded conversations between inmates and outsiders by telephone, which were often done without permission, and for the British Government, it had considered to implant an RFID chip into the prisoner's body.
