Part 1. Believe it or not. 18 true facts about our planet that are hard to believe.
Our life and the world around us are full of incredible things that are sometimes hard to believe. Many of the facts will seem to you nonsense, because before reading them you thought about them completely differently. These incredible facts will prove to you that the world is not as it seems at first sight!
1. The most distant point from the center of the Earth is not Everest.
The earth is slightly oval, wider at the equator. This means that the most distant point from the center of the Earth will be Chimborazo volcano in Ecuador, which is located at an altitude of 6267 meters above sea level.
2. Time passes faster for your face than for your feet.
This is a consequence of Einstein's theory of relativity, according to which time flows more slowly for objects experiencing more gravity with respect to those experiencing less gravity. Since your legs are closer to the center of the Earth, they experience a little more gravity than your head (if you are standing). However it may sound strange, the scientists checked this statement with the help of very accurate clocks.
3. Almost all life on Earth died out about 250 million years ago.
The end of the Permian mass extinction occurred about 250 million years ago and killed about 90 percent of all species on Earth. Less than 5 percent of marine species and less than a third of large land animals survived.
4. We can not see more than 95 percent of what is in the universe.
Dark energy (forces that we do not see) and dark matter (particles that do not interact with light) make up most of what is in space.
5. In 1991, 60,000 jellyfish revolved around the Earth.
In 1991, during the SLS-1 mission from NASA, jellyfish were placed in packages with sea water, sent into space and contributed to their reproduction. It turned out that the space young jellyfish looked almost the same as the earth, but suffered from dizziness, returning to Earth.
6. Some snakes can fly.
There are 5 known species of snakes that are capable of this. Technically, they glide more than fly, but it still looks scary.
7. The Eiffel Tower expands and contracts by 15 cm on hot and cold days.
This is caused by thermal expansion.
