Ma’ruf Amin : I am ready to wear pants

Ma'ruf AminMa'ruf Amin -  As a senior Muslim cleric, vice president-elect Ma'ruf Amin is famous for his Indonesian Islamic attire, which always includes a scarf, white shirt, black peci cap and sarong.

However, many were curious whether the former Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) chairman would maintain his signature look after his inauguration with the President on Oct. 20.

Ma’ruf made assurances that he would be fine if he had to wear a suit and tie for formal occasions.

“Let’s see. Until today, I’m still wearing a sarong. I haven’t been told to not to,” he told reporters on Thursday on the sidelines of his visit to Vice President Jusuf Kalla.

However, Ma’ruf admitted that he fancied sarong more.

“I’ve been wearing sarong [for a long time], so it’s comfortable, but I can wear pants. I’m ready to wear pants,” he said.

The 76-year-old cleric was known as a prominent Muslim leader and former United Development Party (PPP) lawmaker before he ran for vice president with incumbent President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo.
