Suicide is the choice of some people as a "solution" to his life's problems. As people living around "potential" victims, we need to be there for them.

We need to be sensitive to those who are in need of moral assistance, so that suicide does not occur. According to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP), these are the main signs and causes of someone committing suicide!

1. What actually drives people to commit suicide?

Suicides most often occur due to stress that is hard to hold again by the person concerned.

2. Common signs someone will commit suicide

The sign of someone who is about to commit suicide is not clearly visible. They hide their expressions well. But there are still signs that can be seen from these 3 main things; speech, behavior and mood.

The talk of a "prospective" victim is about himself being a burden to others, he feels depressed, he experiences physical / mental pain that has been detained, and he has no reason to live.

Behavior characteristics of a "potential" suicide victim include: the increasing use of alcohol or drugs, finding ways to harm themselves, acting very carelessly, withdrawing from various activities, isolating themselves from family and sleeping too many acquaintances, visit many people to "say goodbye", there is no longer any purpose in doing activities and being aggressive.

While the mood characteristics of a "prospective" suicide victim include: depression, loss of enthusiasm, rampage, irritability, embarrassment and anxiety.

3. The factors that cause a person to commit suicide are divided into 3 categories: health factors, environmental factors and historical factors

There are several health conditions, such as: mental health disorders (depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, antisocial disorders, psychotic disorders and anxiety disorders), disorders of substance abuse and serious or chronic health conditions and excessive pain.

Environmental factors that can cause a person to commit suicide include: traumatic events related to death / divorce / job loss, prolonged stress due to torture / bullying / problems with a partner or access to weapons or drugs. In addition, hanging out with other people who have suicidal tendencies can also be the cause.

Historical factors that can influence a person to commit suicide are his own attempts to do suicide before or he was born into a family that was recorded as having committed suicide too. This fact can be a sign of a person's tendency to commit suicide.

4. The following is a list of things you need to do and don't do with "potential" suicides

When talking to a "prospective" suicide victim, try to always be yourself, listen fully, sympathize sincerely, describe words of hope and respond seriously to all of his talk.

The important thing to be remembered is don't argue with him, don't act like you're surprised, don't promise to keep anything (because you need professional help in this case), don't offer help to solve the problem and don't blame yourself because you can't treat someone's depression. Know that even the happiness and misery of the people closest to you is not your responsibility.
