News24xx.com - At least five people were killed and around 90 others injured in clashes in the Indian capital during protests over the new citizenship law, a senior hospital official told Reuters on Tuesday.

"Some people who were taken had gunshot wounds," Dr Rajesh Kalra, an additional medical supervisor at the Teg Bahadur Teachers' Hospital, said of Monday's clashes.

Clashes erupted among thousands showing for and against the new citizenship law. The police used tear gas and smoke grenades, but struggled to disperse the crowd throwing stones.

One policeman was among those killed in the violence that erupted just before the inaugural visit of US President Donald Trump to the capital. Trump and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi are scheduled to meet on Tuesday at a place located a few miles away from where the clashes took place.

Tensions in several parts of the city remained high on Tuesday with schools remaining closed in several regions, amid news reports of new clashes. At least five metro stations in the city are closed.

Clashes on Monday were among the worst seen in Delhi since protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) began in early December. The capital of India has become a hotbed of protest against the law, which makes it easy for non-Muslim lanes from three neighboring predominantly Muslim countries to gain Indian citizenship.
