News24xx.com - Joan Smalls successfully pioneered her career as a model. But apparently, she had difficulty getting an offer because of her dark skin.

The journey of Joan Smalls model career is not always running smoothly. Early in her career, Puerto Rican women had become a victim of discrimination in the world of modeling. Have dark skin, Joan often experienced rejections.

"Yes, I was rejected because of my skin color and it was very unfortunate and narrow-minded, but I did not want to give up. I then surround myself with creative people who see beauty as it is" said Joan as quoted FemaleFirst.

The 29-year-old woman asserted that race, color, or religion is the identity that makes a person unique. It is unfortunate that many brands are still looking for models with common stereotypes. "It's all about breaking down negative energy" Joan added.

Then, if failed to become a model, Joan admitted would choose a profession as a psychologist. In the past, she once planned to continue her education to a doctoral program in psychology. "I like to get to know people more closely and what motivates them, and how to understand the human mind and how to help them" Joan said.
